March 1, 2014

It's been a long winter, bird traffic has been very low.  Cardinals, Juncos, Sparrows and Downy Woodpeckers.

Until today...Cow Birds and the first American Gold Finch.

Started looking for a hummingbird feeder to replace what I had, normally put it out any time after the 5th of April.

January 1, 2014

Cold and cloudy, light snow

  • Mourning Dove's first visit in quite some time
  • a pair of Downy Woodpeckers
  • and a pair of Cardinals.
  • Juncos,
  • Black Caps come and go and who can't forget the
  • Sparrows.
  • Still no finches.  We've had them before, but we are noticing that since the trees in the back have been cut down, our activity is not the same as in previous years.

A number of Glaucous gulls flying through the trees, weather is on it's way in.  All white with black at their wing tips.

December 21, 2013

With all the rain today it has been another slow day at the feeders.

Cardinals first thing this morning, a few Juncos and Sparrows.

The 10" of snow we had on the patio, we are down to maybe 2" thanks to the temps and the rain.

December 15, 2013

Another week has come and gone and yesterday we got 10 - 12" of snow.

It's been a slow week, our regulars, Downy Woodpeckers (male and female), Dark-Eyed Juncos, Black Cap Chickadees and Blue Jays.

What I haven't seen yet is the finches.

Hand Feeding

With Black Cap Chickadees feeding I mentioned to my two grand daughters I was going to try and feed them from my hand.

I always have peanuts in the house for the peanut feeder so I put a few in my hand and stood outside near the feeders and waited.  It didn't take long for one to land on my finger and take a peanut.  I had told my wife I had done this previously and now the three of them saw it happen.

The Downy Woodpeckers landed in nearby trees so I came in so as to let them come to the feeder so my girls could watch them up close.

Enjoyment of having back yard feeders
