December 21, 2013

With all the rain today it has been another slow day at the feeders.

Cardinals first thing this morning, a few Juncos and Sparrows.

The 10" of snow we had on the patio, we are down to maybe 2" thanks to the temps and the rain.

December 15, 2013

Another week has come and gone and yesterday we got 10 - 12" of snow.

It's been a slow week, our regulars, Downy Woodpeckers (male and female), Dark-Eyed Juncos, Black Cap Chickadees and Blue Jays.

What I haven't seen yet is the finches.

Hand Feeding

With Black Cap Chickadees feeding I mentioned to my two grand daughters I was going to try and feed them from my hand.

I always have peanuts in the house for the peanut feeder so I put a few in my hand and stood outside near the feeders and waited.  It didn't take long for one to land on my finger and take a peanut.  I had told my wife I had done this previously and now the three of them saw it happen.

The Downy Woodpeckers landed in nearby trees so I came in so as to let them come to the feeder so my girls could watch them up close.

Enjoyment of having back yard feeders

Summer 2013

Summer 2013

Pictures to be added are

  1. Juvi American Bald Eagle
  2. Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds
  3. American Black Vulture
The bald eagle was sighted when we were on vacation in Pennsylvania, just sitting in the crotch of a tree.

During the spring, summer and early fall periods, we hang a hummingbird feeder in the backyard and have frequent visits from Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds

American Black Vultures are common to our area here in Niagara Falls along the Lower Niagara River between Queenston ON and Lewiston NY

Birdwatch December 1, 2013

The last number of years we have had feeders in our back yard to attract birds and Penny with her new camera has been taking pictures of birds both at our feeders (shown below) and in the wild. (to be added)

Check this out, Ontario Feeder Watch Cam:  http://cams.allaboutbirds.org/channel/38/FeederWatch_Cam/
active from mid November to early April.

This winter we have put up a peanut feeder, a suet feeder, a finch feeder and a sunflower feeder.  All these feeders are productive.

Already this morning we have had a a pair of Cardinals, 2 Dark-Eyed Juncos and 2 Blue Jays and of course many Field Sparrows.  Also today we had a Morning Dove and a female Downy Woodpecker.
